Oatly is one of the most well known and popular plant milk brands. Their modern approach to packaging, controversial marketing campaigns and delicious drinks have a large part to play in this, but they’ve also been around for quite some time. The company started in Sweden in 1994 and its founder, Rickard Öste, can be credited with developing oat milk whilst working at Lund University as a food scientist.

Although the company originally produced oat milk, they have since moved on to other products such as ice cream, custard and “oatgurt”.

Oatly currently offers six variations of their famous oat drink with many of them available in both chilled and ambient packaging. We’ve taken a look at these six products below in more detail.

Oatly Whole Milk

Best For Transitioning To Vegan Milk

This whole oat drink is the closest comparison to whole cow’s milk, so if you’re looking to switch to a healthy vegan alternative then this would be a great starting point.

The milc is rich in unsaturated fats but has a rich, creamy taste, and is amazing on cereal, in tea and coffee and as a substitute for dairy in baking.

If you enjoy full flavours then this is the milk for you. Try it on cereal instead of cow milk and let us know what you think.. we think you’ll be impressed!

This milc comes fortified with calcium, antioxidants and added vitamins D2 and B12 to ensure you’re getting some of these essential nutrients whilst transitioning towards a more plant-based diet.

Oatly Semi Skimmed

Best For Adding To Coffee

Do you like a fuller flavour to your milk but you’re also conscious about the fat content? This semi oat drink is only 1.5% fat and tastes great in smoothies, cereal, in a glass by itself, or added to your morning tea or coffee as it mixes well. Not only are you opting for vegan milk but you’re also keeping your fat consumption down.

This is the go-to if you’re used to buying semi-skimmed milk. You’ll get a great flavour whilst reducing the fat content by just under half!

It also comes fortified with calcium, antioxidants and added vitamins D2 and B12 to ensure you’re getting some of these essential nutrients whilst switching to a more plant-based diet.

The Oat Drink Semi also comes in another version, with ambient packaging to be stored at room temperature, meaning you can store it for longer in the pantry and only chill it once opened. The nutritional information for the chilled and ambient packaging versions are almost the same, but we’ve included both below in case you wanted to compare the differences.

Best For Low Calorie Alternative

The easy availability of low-fat Oatly milk is very exciting, especially since it’s only 0.5% fat and still contains all the vitamins included in the higher fat percentage options.

This low-fat option can be added to multiple dishes when cooking, adding to smoothies, drinking straight, or what we think it’s best for, in a bowl of cereal.

It comes fortified with calcium, antioxidants and added vitamins D2 and B12 to ensure you’re getting some of these essential nutrients whilst switching to a more plant-based diet.

Oatly Semi Organic

Best For The Organic Option

If you’re someone who prefers to eat and drink organically then Oatly has an option for you! They’ve added organic rapeseed oil to the Semi recipe to make it 100% organic.

The taste is very similar to the oat drink semi, maybe even a little creamier because of the rapeseed oil.

If you’re committed to living a life with organic produce then this is the option for you, and it’s definitely worth the switch from dairy products to the healthier option.

The organic milc also comes in ambient packaging so it’s able to be stored at room temperature. Again, the nutritional information is similar, but we’ve included both so you can play spot the difference below.

Oatly Chocolate Deluxe

Best For Vegan Hot Chocolate

If you’re a chocoholic like us then I’m sure you’ll have missed the creamy taste of chocolate milk. This drink brings that back with an all in one option – simply drink straight from the carton or heat up in the microwave or saucepan for that hot chocolate feeling.

The cocoa used in this drink is UTZ certified. This means that the cocoa is grown with sustainable agricultural methods and the farmers involved have good working conditions and fair wages.

There is some added sugar to this product to improve the taste, but at 3% it’s still less than many other milcs on the market.

Oatly Barista

Best For Cappuccino

A coffee shop favourite and a lifeline for those in need of vegan coffee on the go. Oatly Barista is now present in thousands of coffee shops worldwide, providing a viable alternative to traditional milk to create foamy drinks.

This is a staple product in our fridge, and not only is it perfect to be steamed in hot drinks, but it’s also a great addition to an americano. We found this barista edition mixes best with hot drinks, even when cold.

The secret to it performing well when steamed is that it’s high in unsaturated fats. So maybe not the choice to pour over cereal as the calories are also higher, but in the small quantities used to make a coffee, it makes for a good replacement to dairy milk.

This milc comes fortified with calcium, antioxidants and added vitamin B12 to ensure you’re getting some of these essential nutrients whilst switching to a more plant-based diet.
